An ACAN is a public notice indicating to the supplier community that a department or agency intends to award a contract for goods, services or construction to a pre-identified supplier, thereby allowing other suppliers to signal their interest in bidding, by submitting a statement of capabilities.

The department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has a requirement to:

(a) review and analyze confidential industrial energy-use and production data collected by Statistics Canada and to maintain this detailed information in a database so that NRCan can assess and report on the long-term impacts of energy efficiency and energy consumption trends in Canada’s industrial sectors;

(b) collect energy and production data as well as review, test and revise ENERGY STAR for industry benchmarking tools from a Canadian perspective.
